The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA Vermont) has been working for local farms, healthy food, & strong communities since 1971.
NOFA Vermont is a nonprofit association of farmers, gardeners, and consumers working to promote an economically viable and ecologically sound Vermont food system for the benefit of current and future generations.
NOFA Vermont was founded in Putney in 1971, making it one of the oldest organic farming associations in the United States. Today, we are proud to have over 1200 members throughout the state and to certify over 580 farms and processors to the USDA National Organic Program Standards. We are passionate about increasing the acreage of certified organic land in Vermont while also increasing the access of local organic food to all Vermonters. All our programs strive to meet these goals, whether it involves working with schools to bring local foods into the cafeteria or providing business planning services to farmers to ensure their businesses stay viable. Whether you are a Vermonter who gardens, farms, eats local food, or enjoys our rural communities, NOFA Vermont welcomes you.

The Burlington Urban Agriculture Task Force was created this March by a City Council Resolution. Our charge is to develop recommendations for a cohesive urban agricultural policy, improved rules and regulations addressing urban agriculture, and steps to better promote and govern urban agriculture in Burlington. We are working to develop comprehensive vision of urban agriculture for the city. The task force will report out a policy framework grounded in this vision that will support innovative approaches to integrating food systems with urban planning, economic development, and social justice. Learn more about the Task Force at its table this Summervale!
Children’s Bake Sale for Somalia: Community families are coming together to help the people in Somalia who are suffering through a horrible food scarcity. We have organized a table of baked goods to raise money for the UN Refugee Agency. We will also be selling tickets for a 50-50 raffle. Give It Back to You live by Bearquarium at Sullivan Hall in NYC. We are so excited to hear this Burlington band play at Summervale this Thursday, August 18th!
Though the name originated from an epic elevator shaft connecting two Burlington, VT apartments to one another, the music has in fact very little to do with this. The connection lies in the uniqueness of name and sound. Bearquarium. Is it whiskey-soaked rock, modern day afro-beat, old school soul? Yes. All of the above and more. Listening to Bearquarium is like swimming through a colorful aquarium full of bears and dancing your pants off while doing so (nothing’s impossible). Bearquarium has often been compared to classic groups such as Tower of Power, Van Morrison and The Meters, yet their influences range from Fela Kuti to Talking Heads, Red Hot Chili Peppers to Derek Trucks, Mr. Bungle to Bonobo, Thievery Corporation to Led Zeppelin, and everything in between.
Keep up with Bearquarium on Facebook and Twitter. See you at Summervale!

An Interview with Diana Doll, owner of StrayCat Flower Farm.
What is the land you farm on like?
Our farm sits on two acres I call ‘the crown of the Intervale’, since we’re on a bit of higher ground less likely to flood than the rest of the ‘vale.
What does StrayCat grow?
All sorts of plants - flowers, shrubs, foliages, perennials, bulbs. We grow plants that last well in water once cut.
Where are your markets?
Our retail markets are the Burlington Farmers Market, City Market, Healthy Living. We also provide flower arrangements for special events and take phone orders from customers for ‘same-day delivery.’
What did you do before you decided to become a farmer?
I worked at O’Bread Bakery in Shelburne for about 10 years. I’ll always hold a special place in my heart for Chuck & Carla, who continue to crank out such wonderful bread.
Why did you decide to farm, and where did you get farm experience?
As a kid, I worked in my mom’s and grandparents’ flower and vegetable gardens; in high school I sold blueberries we grow at my dad’s farm. I worked in a few plant nurseries, but didn’t work at a flower farm prior to StrayCat. I wish I had, though, to lessen the incline on that dang learning curve!
What most excites you about farming, and what do you enjoy the least?
It’s exciting being in good company with other growers, from whom I’m always learning. I dread making the same mistake twice.
What are the most challenging and rewarding elements of your business?
Most challenging: fixing equipment. Most rewarding: earning a living.
What do you do when you’re not farming?
I love to read. I call it ‘armchair traveling’, as it brings me to other places and perspectives, and is so affordable! A nice mental break.

Cynthea Wight Hausman, owner of Cynthea’s Spa, is celebrating her spa’s seventh anniversary with blueberries, honey, goat milk and flowers. But the goodies won’t be for customers to eat, they’ll be used in her new Farm to Spa treatments of wraps and scrubs to make skin look and feel great.
Cynthea and her staff are excited about her new offerings. She notes, “As far as we know, we’re the first urban spa to get involved with the “hyperlocal spa” trend and use local produce and products for our clients. And where better than in Burlington, Vermont? We’re an urban day-spa with a love of our local farmers, and we want to offer a uniquely Vermont experience that you can’t get anywhere else.”
Farm to Spa treatments are based on produce from farm partners of Burlington’s Intervale, including Adam’s Berry Farm, Arethusa Farm, and StrayCat Flower Farm, and Shelburne Vineyards. The offerings will use what’s available in each season to nourish and support all types of skin. Flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables will all be used for their special properties to meet the needs of different skin types.
Farm to Spa hand treatments will be complimentary at Cynthea’s Summervale Pop-up Spa!
Farm to Spa products available at Summervale:
4oz scrub: in various “flavors” $28
2oz scrub: $15
(Cynthea’s Spa can take credit cards on site)
Cynthea’s Spa has also generously donated a $150 gift certificate for our Raffle Prize. Be sure to sign up at an admissions table to enter the raffle!
